Javier Solana: the Palestinian people can count on us

The EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Javier Solana, has assured the Palestinian people that they can count on the EU to exert maximum pressure for the urgent supply of humanitarian aid to the Gaza strip, a Council press release has said.
Speaking in Ramallah on January 28 after a meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas during the final leg of his trip to the Middle East, he also voiced the EU's support for the efforts to restore unity amongst the Palestinians, under the Authority of President Abbas. Describing as totally inadequate the current supply of aid to Gaza, he added: “You can count on us in this dramatic situation… We are putting as much pressure as we can to ensure the quick and unimpeded access of humanitarian aid to the strip.”
Earlier, Javier Solana had met Israeli leaders in Jerusalem, as well as King Abdullah II of Jordan in Amman, as well as Egyptian leaders in Cairo, where he also held talks with US Envoy George Mitchell.
